Summer Water Safety Tips Every Northern Rivers Family Should Know.

Summer in the Northern Rivers is a special time. Warm days, afternoons at the beach, backyard pool fun and long school holidays all mean plenty of time in and around the water. But with so many opportunities to swim comes an important responsibility for families: keeping kids safe, confident and aware of their surroundings. Whether you’re heading to Byron Bay’s incredible beaches, cooling off in a backyard pool, or visiting local creeks and waterholes, these expert tips from our team at Bangalow Swim School will help you enjoy the season safely.

1. Always Keep Kids Within Arm’s Reach
Supervision is the number one safety rule. Even confident swimmers can get into difficulty quickly, especially in natural environments like Tallow Creek, Lake Ainsworth or at busy beaches. If your child is under five, stay close enough to touch, not watching from a distance. For older children, maintain constant visual supervision without distractions.

2. Choose the Right Spots for Swimming
We have beautiful beaches across the region but be aware, conditions can change fast.
Before heading out, be sure to check:
  • Beach safety signs and patrol flags
  • Swell and tide updates
  • Weather warnings
  • Council alerts for local swimming holes
Always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches such as Main Beach, Clarke’s or Lennox Head. Rips, gutters and shifting sandbanks are common hazards, especially for young swimmers.

3. Backyard Pool Safety Matters Just as Much
Many water emergencies happen at home where you think it safe and less attention may be given.
Quick summer check:
  • Is your pool fence secure and self-closing?
  • Are toys and flotation devices left in the pool (which attract young kids)?
  • Do visitors or relatives know the pool rules?
Small inflatable pools can also pose risks. If it can hold more than a few centimetres of water, it needs active supervision and must be emptied immediately after use so your little ones don't sneak in for a dip when you're not around.

4. Give Kids the Skills They Need Before the Holidays
Building water confidence before a busy summer can make a huge difference. Skills like blowing bubbles, floating, returning to the wall, and basic propulsion all help kids stay calmer and safer in unfamiliar environments. At Bangalow Swim School, our small-group lessons focus on developing these foundational skills gently and consistently with playful lessons, helping little swimmers feel safe no matter where the season takes them so they can have endless fun throughout summer.

5. Teach Simple Safety Rules (And Repeat Them Often)
Kids respond well to routine and consistency is key. These simple easy rules can be taught from toddler age:
  • Stop, look, and ask before getting into the water
  • Never swim alone
  • Always stay close to an adult
  • Walk — don’t run — near the pool
  • Wear a lifejacket when boating or kayaking
Make these part of your family’s summer rhythm.

6. Be Prepared for Emergencies
Even with great supervision, accidents can happen. Ensure:
  • A responsible adult knows basic CPR
  • You have a charged phone nearby
  • Kids wear sun-safe swim gear and take breaks to avoid fatigue
A few minutes of preparation can make all the difference.
